Birchen Lane is a mile north of Haywards Heath town centre and railway station, and close to all amenities.

The site is on the edge of an attractive residential area and surrounded by visually and ecologically rich ancient woodlands and historic hedgerows. The Carter Jonas masterplanning team were commissioned to prepare an outline application for 48 low-density dwellings. The vision was for an outstanding development of high quality housing in an exemplary landscape setting with:

  • A mix of houses, flats and tenures from two to six bedrooms including 30% affordable housing
  • Low density development with detached and semi-detached houses predominating
  • All hedgerows and woodland edges retained to give a strong character
  • Connecting open spaces incorporating sustainable drainage

Due to the landscape and ecological sensitivity of the site, extensive ecological buffer zones were built into the masterplan, and long-term maintenance and management plans are proposed for the entire site.
