Our challenge in redesigning the 1970s shopping mall in South London was to help
reverse its reputation for cheap shopping and social problems, and bring about long-term
improvements to retailers and the local community. Working with Southwark Council
we chose to rejuvenate the environment and enliven the shopping experience by selective
replacement of parts of the building. A glass roof was installed and new entrances
created to let in the daylight and improve visibility. Lighter flooring has been
laid; walls made brighter and tenants’ now have individually designed signage and
shop fronts. Security has also been enhanced to give shoppers greater confidence.
