Our challenge was to create a new entrance to the 1060’s monastery and tertiary
education centre hidden behind a series of buildings dating from 1850 to 1930. The
solution was a striking contemporary design with an emphasis on quality materials:
brick, stone and glass. Internally, a calm, spiritual atmosphere pervades the waiting
and reception area. Adjacent to the entrance, existing buildings have been remodelled
to form retreat accommodation and meeting rooms. The completed entrance building
was given an RIBA Regional Award.
