We were given a stringent space and cost criteria and also had to take into account
the new Library’s proximity to a Grade I ancient monument, the Kennet & Avon Canal
and a busy inner ring road. The result is a long low form, typical of canal-side
architecture in England, with a central light well that creates a link between the
floors. The spacious, public areas on the ground floor have full height glazing
and look out through a colonnade of timber yacht mast columns onto the Old Wharf
and canal.
