Five-a-side football centre breathes a new lease of life into a multi-storey car park in Central London.
We have secured planning permission for a unique 5-a-side football centre on the upper storeys of an underused car park. The application proposed 5 all-weather 5-a-side football pitches (two pitches on the 3rd and 4th floors and one pitch on the 5th floor) and a small pavilion.
This unusual proposal required working closely with Council officers to agree the scope of the application and how best to take it forward. Pre-application discussions highlighted technical issues primarily related to noise, floodlighting and highways. Through working collaboratively with the Council, these issues were resolved to the satisfaction of officers and the application was recommended for approval. However, due to significant local opposition the application was unanimously refused by the Planning Committee.
Following detailed investigation into the technical details of the application at an Informal Hearing, the Inspector allowed the ensuing appeal and made a partial award of costs. The scheme opened in November 2010 and is one of the most unique leisure sites in the country.
